CFP “Parallel societies” in multi-ethnic and multi-identitarian societies – Living together, living apart in Germany, Europe, and Israel

Conference Fellowship for PhD and advanced MA Students for the conference

The Haifa Center for German and European Studies (HCGES) (Prof. Stefan Ihrig) and the Amsterdam Duitsland Instituut (Prof. Ton Nijhuis) organize a two-days conference that will take place on May 9-10, 2018 at the University of Haifa on the concept, research and debates dealing around the term “Parallel Societies.”

“Parallel Societies” as a concept and a term underwent a remarkable career in Germany over the last two and a half decades. It was first employed in academia as a warning and has since become an integral part of popular/populist discourse when dealing with problems of integration and immigration in Germany.

Our conference seeks to overview the life a career of the concept and present new research on the topic. We also offer a framing of the concept in Jewish perspectives and will connect it to current Israeli society. The core of the conference will be devoted to the debates in Germany today in the last decades. Speakers include the former president of Germany, Christian Wulff, as well as key specialists on the debate such as Prof. Moshe Zimmermann (Jerusalem), Prof. Hans-Georg Soeffner (Essen) as well as the sociologist who originally coined the term, Prof. Wilhelm Heitmeyer (Bielefeld).

We invite PhD students and advanced MA students from our DAAD sister centers to apply for participation in the conference in order to enhance networking among us. We are able to offer slots in our conference either for a) active participants who already have carried out research they want to present in the panel to the full conference or for b) participants who will present their research in a poster session during the conference.

Successful applicants will receive a travel grant and accommodation during the conference. Applications should include a short motivation letter, a short CV, a project title and a short abstract (that makes clear how your paper and research relates to the overall theme).

The application deadline is 5 March 2018. Applications should be send to the HCGES:
Successful applicants will receive detailed information on travel and logistics as well as a detailed course
