Description and objectives

In 2019, we would like to invite young academics from all centers in the DAAD Network to attend an international ‘summer school’ in Porto Alegre, Brazil. This ‘summer school’ will comprise lectures, podium discussions and workshops on the key topic “Migration”. The school will take place at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), from the 30th of September to the 7th of October. The school will also include field trips around Porto Alegre.
This interdisciplinary meeting will focus on the challenges of migration in a global world (Labor, Market, Culture and Integration). The main objective is to consider national and international regulations and make suggestions about how best to take a more comprehensive understanding of the various dimensions related to migration (i.e.historical, cultural, linguistic, legal, political and ethical aspects). In this connection, participants will have the opportunity to present a short paper on topics related to ‘migration’ (15 min). And in addition to academic discussions, the conference will promote opportunities for early career researchers from the DAAD Centers around the world to develop their network.

Main topics / key-aspects

1. Ethics challenges of the migration in Germany, Brazil and the USA (‘Ethische Herausforderungen der Migration’)
2. Migration, Culture and Integration (‘Migration, Kultur und Integration’)
3. Migration, Social Support Network and Law (‘Migranten, Unterstützungsnetzwerke und Recht’)
4. History, Politics and Migration (‘Geschichte, Politik und Migration’)
5. Language, Literature and Migration (‘Sprache, Literatur und Migration’)

Considering the topics of the seminar we especially encourage applications by students of history, law, social sciences, philosophy, languages and literature.

The summer school is funded by the DAAD and the CDEA. Travel costs of up to 1.200 € are covered by the CDEA in accordance with the DAAD guidelines and the German Federal Travel Expenses Act (Bundesreisekostengesetz BRKG) including second class railway tickets and economy class flights.
