At the Margins of Global Neoliberalism. The Latin American members of the Mont Pelerin Society, 1947-1981
Since its foundation in April 1947, the Mont Pelerin Society (MPS) has become a core institution of global neoliberalism. It has gathered Nobel laureates, businesspeople, intellectuals, politicians from all over the world. Still, Western European and North American economists have had an important ascendency over Latin American, Asian, and African elites. In this presentation, I will assess the centre-periphery relationship between key global north MPS intellectuals and South American elites between 1947 and 1981. What strategies did Southern elites follow to overcome their peripheral condition within this global society? What was the role of Western economists in the diffusion of market-oriented ideas in Latin America? What did characterize the link between Northern economists and Southern elites in the early second half of the 20th century? By addressing these questions, I will contribute to the discussion on the role of peripheral actors in the development of this ideology worldwide.
La discussion sera assurée par Pierre Alayrac, Postdoctorant, Institut Universitaire Européen de Florence.
