Call for Applications
The 2019 Doctoral Conference of currently and formerly funded DAAD Centers for German and European Studies is oriented towards a reflection upon turning points in Germany’s history over the 20th century, their causes, and their implications for Germany, Europe and global affairs. Ranging from the transformation from Imperial Germany to the Weimar Republic as a result of the defeat in the First World War, to the attack on Poland that marked the beginning of the second, from the act of formulating the Federal Basic Law that lead to the establishment of the Federal Republic, which was followed by the foundation of a second German state, the GDR, to its overcoming with the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the process of unification, the years 1919, 1939, 1949 and 1989, among others, illustrate some of the most significant turning points in German pre- and postwar history.
Looking at Germany from the perspective of these shattering shifts and moments of unexpected opportunities helps better understanding the dynamic and alternating course of the political developments and social transformations that shaped German societies in the 20th century. This approach offers the chance to review German history from various disciplines and perspectives. Besides new historical research that analyses these and related dates as entangled moments, which shed light on the conflicts and struggles that characterize German affairs within a European and global context, the conference also invites contributions that analyze legal frameworks and contexts, especially focusing on the transformation from National Socialist jurisprudence to the introduction of the Federal Basic Law and its impact on postwar German democracy and our contemporary understanding of the constitutional state. Furthermore, looking at the social, political, and economic implications of the above mentioned turning points will enable a comparative perspective on persisting challenges concerning questions of national identity, migration, European integration and democratic culture. Last but not least, many of these turning points left traces in literature, theater, arts and cinema, which offers the opportunity to study the cultural memory of these events as well as their reflection in German pre- and postwar culture.
In addition to doctoral works that specifically address this overarching theme, we welcome contributions that bring forward diverse issues regarding the study of Germany/Europe and German/European matters, from a diversity of disciplines, research methods, theoretical perspectives, and topical foci. We look forward to receiving submissions reporting well-advanced research, as well as work in progress.
The goals of the conference are to advance excellent doctoral research on German and European affairs in all related disciplines ranging from sociology and political science to literary and cultural studies, history and law, and to support academic advancement of young scholars. To these ends, conference events will combine student presentations, guest lectures, career advancement sessions, and plenary discussions, as well as cultural excursions.
The conference is hosted jointly by CGS at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and HCGES at University of Haifa and will be held in Haifa and Jerusalem. While the conference will be held in English, we encourage German-language submissions and will also organize several German-language events. We invite doctoral students from all DAAD-sponsored centers and partner institutions.
The doctoral conference is sponsored by the DAAD from funds of the German Federal Foreign Office. Accommodation expenses and program costs will be covered from these funds. There will be no participation fee. Travel expenses will be reimbursed after successful participation in the conference based on the Federal Travel Costs Act (BRKG).
